Eagle River Nature Trail | Malakwa
The Eagle River Nature Trail is a true Shuswap gem! Located between Sicamous and Revelstoke sits the 454-hectare Eagle River Park. The beautiful Eagle River runs from Eagle Pass, high in the Monashee Mountains, west through Malakwa, down to Sicamous, and into Shuswap Lake. The river is an important spawning habitat for Sockeye, Coho, and Chinook salmon. You can watch for the salmon here in the fall!
The Eagle River Nature Parks is an easy, super enjoyable, family-friendly, flat pathway with a series of well-marked loop trails. There are 6 kilometers of trails along the banks of the beautiful river and is great for all levels of hikers. There is plenty of parking, washrooms, and a wide, open, well-maintained trail system.
The forest is a beautiful and ancient old-growth stand of cottonwoods, hemlock, and cedars. It is home to the hundred-year-old Giant Cedars! There are remnants of logging from the 1920s and 1930s here, where many of the ginormous cedars were cut down, and now have become nurse stumps, which give life to the new growth. There are charming boardwalks and bridges, and over 20 interpretive signs throughout.
Views from the waterfront, wooden bench offer visitors a peaceful opportunity to sit and enjoy the colorful Eagle River, glimpse at the train in the distance, and take in the fresh mountain air. Watch for the beautiful Bald Eagles fishing here! A great spectacle in the heart of the Shuswap!
Nearby areas to explore include Yard Creek Provincial Park (located 12 kilometers west) and Mount Griffin Provincial Park/Ecological Reserve (six kilometers south of Eagle River Park).
