North Fork Wild | Malakwa B.C.
North Fork Wild | Malakwa
North Fork Wild is a beautiful family-friendly, well-planned trail network nestled within an incredibly rich and vibrant rainforest! It is a wonderous place to explore!
The woodland is abundant in hemlock, yew, Douglas fir, and Red cedar stands. The canopy above is alive and astir with life.
The forest here is part of the Inland Temperate Rainforest of British Columbia. Boasting to be globally rare, the interior cedar and hemlock rainforest is an inland rainforest, hundreds of miles from the ocean that also gets snow, which contributes to its overall precipitation. The Inland Rainforest Region is also known as the Interior Wet Belt. And the Shuswap is part of the Interior Cedar Hemlock (ICH) zone of the biogeoclimatic zones.
Inland rainforests are unique to south-eastern British Columbia, and we have this beauty right at our fingertips in the Shuswap!
Enchanting and intertwining pathways and trails walk you through the awe-inspiring forest.
Mosses and lichens blanket the ground, a deep green carpet. Mass boulders adorn the ecologically rich valley and ridge trail. For the fungi lover, you may find the elusive, bright orange lobster mushrooms on your adventures!
Bush-craft is at its finest here, thanks to the collaboration between CSRD and The Shuswap Trail Alliance and all of its skilled volunteers! There are 11 bridges, 5 boardwalks, 2 sets of stairs, and 8 rail fences that have been crafted, using rough-cut cedar lumber. The winding and whimsical boardwalks take you through the wetland bog, where you will see prehistoric skunk cabbage! Notice the natural wonders and the varying environment as it changes along your journey.
Great views and easy access to the crystal clear Perry River are seen along the River Side Trail and the historic 100-year-old Pack Trail.
The Perry River, part of the Shuswap watershed, joins the Eagle River near Malakwa. The meeting of the rivers is often referred to as the North Fork.
Peter Jennings donated his 21 hectares to the CSRD in 2012 for this renowned park, for all to enjoy! A plaque commemorates his generosity and his vision. This is a dedicated Conservation Park and an important educational environment. Peter passed away in June 2016.
